Marie and I are not actually eager travellers, despite what many of our friends and family may think. We’ve lived in several interesting places, visited friends and family around the world, but we don’t range far after we’ve arrived. It’s our pattern to explore a smaller place or a smaller town. We’re likely to spendContinue reading “Around which mountain?”

Giggling at fear
Perhaps I have agoraphobia (fear of open spaces) or acrophobia (fear of heights), I’m not sure. One or both, they lead to strange emotions for someone who enjoys playing in the mountains. I grew up in semi-urban and ex-urban communities in the Upper Midwest of the USA, which means mountains were foreign to me asContinue reading “Giggling at fear”
Skipping the peak
I’m building my ability to focus on the journey and drop the concept of the finish line as the goal. We’re often beset by due dates and deliveries at work, finish lines or game wins in sport, and myriad other lines in the sand. Many of the mountains are named with the suffix -tinden or -tindan meaning “tall, sharp mountaintop” in Norwegian. The tops are indeed sharp. Typical lower slopes are tumble-down rocks where moss, grass, shrub, and tree find homes.Continue reading “Avalanche zones”
Bending time to our whims
Marie has a long weekend off from her job as “gallerivert” (galleri|vert, gallery host) at Zahlfjøsen (Zahl|fjøsen, Zahl [a surname] cowshed). Because the sun just goes around in circles up here, we’ve decided to shift our sleep schedules. I’m typically an early riser, but this weekend I’m crawling in to bed closer to my wake-upContinue reading “Bending time to our whims”
Hiking in the midnight sun?
My dad gets a text message every time I set out on an adventure and use Strava to track me. He’s never been to Kjerringøy, but after a few months of following a blue dot on a map he has a good feeling of the terrain. “Hiking in the midnight sun?” he asks by WhatsAppContinue reading “Hiking in the midnight sun?”
